Wellesbourne and Walton Community Cares is fast approaching it’s 6 month anniversary and whilst it has been a difficult year for everyone, we can take heart from what the WWCC has achieved and become. We have a strong pool of 200 volunteers, who have given their time to help people across the community and without them none of this would have been possible. It is due to this desire to help that we are in the process of registering as a charity to continue to offer all of the existing services and reach across the community.

We are still offering the services of befriending, prescription delivery and shopping. At this stage, as previously communicated the newspaper delivery has been handed back to the One Stop.

We along with the various walking groups in Wellesbourne and Walton are also looking to set up walks to get people outside and socialising, in a socially distanced manner, to gain the benefit that the outdoors gives to our mental health. Please do not worry though, we are splitting this up into many groups to cater for every ability!

We are also aware that we are fast approaching the festive time of the year and whilst Christmas brings a lot of happiness to many, it will also be daunting to some with the shorter days and thought of spending less time with family and friends than usual. We are in the process of making plans for events across the community that everyone can join in with and we will share these in due course. One thing that we are looking for at this stage is street ambassadors – if you would like to co-ordinate potential events on your street please get in touch.

Indeed, if you have any ideas or suggestions do feel free to contact us.

On behalf of the WWCC. St Peters Church, Hastings House, and Wellesbourne and Walton Parish Council.

Time for a huge round of applause! You may have seen last week that our very own Wendy Waters won the “The Thriving Communities Lockdown Hero’s Award” from Orbit for her continued fantastic work with Hastings House helping people within the Wellesbourne and Walton Community. Huge congratulations to Wendy for this well deserved achievement!

Full release below:

Lockdown Heroes Award

During these exceptional times, at Orbit we have recognised that there are some exceptional people within our communities who have taken the opportunity to help those around them throughout the coronavirus crisis. As such, in this year’s event we decided to include an additional category, for which the winner has been chosen by our own internal panel of judges. This award recognises their achievements and shines a light on how they have helped their communities during these extraordinary times.

Paul Richards, Group Customer Services Director, said, “The coronavirus pandemic has both taken and impacted many lives. It will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on everyone who experienced this unprecedented situation. During difficult times, it is remarkable how some people decide to step up and take action to support their communities and those around them who need help most. We are therefore delighted this year to be able to recognise members of the communities in which we operate, and to give special recognition to people who have been true heroes during this time. As always, it’s a pleasure to read these stories and an honour to celebrate such outstanding contributions.”

The winner of The Thriving Communities Lockdown Heroes Award 2020 is…

Wendy Waters

Wendy was nominated by Cheryl Flavell, Placemaking and Partnerships Manager for Stratford and Warwick. Her nomination submission can be found below:

Wendy works with Hastings House Medical Centre, working alongside the Practice Nurse out in the community.

Wendy has spent her time visiting customers in general needs homes, extra care schemes and Independent living properties, working closely with Orbit employees and medical staff to ensure that customers are being supported. She has been instrumental in working with the customers at Ettington Lodge.

Customers have leaned on Wendy for social isolation support, and she has set up group meetings and navigated issues with them to reach the best result. Before lockdown, Wendy organised coffee mornings and meetings to provide health education about the importance of effective hand washing and how to protect against infection and prevent its spread. Since the coronavirus pandemic started, this service moved to an online and telephone platform where she has continued to engage with customers and take on new referrals. She has set up a community group, organising befriending telephone calls, shopping and prescription delivery with 180 volunteers as well as a facility to organise food for those coming out of hospital.

Since March, the WWCC has evolved from just a handful of people, to now, with 200+ volunteers! The success of this group, could not have happened without the motivation, dedication and willingness to help from our team of volunteers. As a small token of thanks we have delivered a “thank you” card with a badge, to show how grateful we are for their time volunteered. Round of applause to everyone! We are still in the early stages of setting up as a charity and will share more details when we have them.

Don’t forget we are still here, offering support, shopping services and prescription delivery.

Hello to all the followers of WWCC! We hope that you and your families are well, as well as being able to enjoy the summer months.

We hope that by now you will have received the July WWCC Newsletter. In it, we shared some exciting news that we are turning the group into a registered charity to continue providing the service to the community for the foreseeable future. We have been overwhelmed with the support and kind feedback that everyone has provided. Of course, we could not have got to this stage without the support of our volunteers.

We also want you to know that we are still offering the same services. We are aware that some shielded individuals are losing their food parcels, if this is the case you can organise shops to be completed by our volunteers. Newspapers are still being delivered, as are prescriptions from on the village pharmacy on a daily basis. Telephone friendships are also still very much active and we encourage people to make use of this service if they feel lonely.
